Duke of Edinburgh Award

Get Involved

Students from Year 9 onwards are able to get involved in the Arnold Hill Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) Scheme. This leading youth achievement award gives our young people the opportunity to be the very best they can be, and we are fortunate to have a dedicated presence at the academy. DofE activities take place after school in the evenings as well as at weekends throughout the year.

Guidance for parents and pupils wishing to complete the D of E Silver award

Thank you to those who came along to the presentation, earlier this evening (8th October), for students, and their parents, who have expressed an interest in joining the Silver Award this academic year. If you were unable to attend but wish to join the Silver DofE award scheme this coming academic year, you need to get together with others, in a group of between 4 and 7, to complete the Group Summary form and, for each of you, a Registration and Consent form. These need to be returned to the DofE team who will be in B Block Hall at 3.30pm, on Thursday 17th October.

 

The cost of completing the Silver DofE award this coming year is £120

Guidance for parents and pupils wishing to complete the D of E Bronze award

Thank you to all those who attended the presentation on 1st October 2019. Hopefully we will be able to upload the PowerPoint presentation for future reference.

Due to school holidays, exams, trips and the fact that my trainers also deliver training at other award levels there is no leeway to reschedule the navigation day or the two expeditions.

I only have a finite number of trainers and that limits the number of groups I can take on. The groups must consist of between 4 and 7 members, however priority will be given to those with 7 members, then 6 etc. A group of 4 is very vulnerable because if one member pulls out the group is no longer viable and I have wasted one of my trainers so I will not accept applications with only four members.

Each group must have a parent helper. This adult will be the liaison between the trainer and the group, and on the expeditions will assist providing remote supervision of the group. They will be expected to camp overnight and help intervene should a situation arise on site. Sorry but no caravans or motorhomes, it will be sleeping in a tent which the D of E group can provide if required. The camps will be alcohol free but we will feed you an evening meal on the Saturday and breakfast on the Sunday. We do not expect the parent helper or the trainers to be out of pocket so mileage costs and other approved expenses will be paid.

Registration forms were handed out last night but a copy is available to download below. Completed registration forms should be handed in on Thursday 17th October from 3.30pm in B Block Hall.

Please ensure the email address used is written down legibly and is a monitored account. As well as this email being your link email to eDofE (the online management tool for D of E candidates) there will be lots of information being circulated over the academic year via email as that is the only approved option. Neither my trainers nor I work at Arnold Hill Academy so email is our only viable option. Whatsapp and Messenger are not approved methods of communication.

Successful groups/candidates will be contacted by email before the October half term and will be sent an individual registration form – this is a Word document and should be completed as such as we will be copy and pasting information from that form direct onto eDofE to generate your user name and your initial password. Handwritten forms will be returned as experience shows these generate the most mistakes. The programme will then send you an email with a link for you to use when you log in for the first time.

The cost per candidate will be £115. There will be no extras on top of this. Last years budget worked out as an average of £111.36 per candidate once all the bills had been paid.

The academy manage all the D of E finances via the ScoPay system so you will be advised when and how much at the appropriate time.

The Arnold Hill DofE group own a good selection of quality 2 or 3 person tents as well as stoves, cooking pots and rucksacks (both male and female) which can be hired for the duration of the award so there is no requirement for you to buy these items unless of course you have a burning desire to do so.

At least one of the DofE leadership team will be in the B Block Hall after school every Thursday till around 3.30pm should you need to speak to one of us.
